DIY – Tie-Bleached Shirts

April 24, 2010 in DIY

Looking for a cool way to use Sidecca merchandise in DIY projects? We have an awesome idea for you to try! This includes using bleach, so make sure you take all precautions before trying anything! Make sure you read the safety hazards and instructions on the back of your bleach bottle and wear latex gloves!!

Go to your local Sidecca store and pick up one of our many basic items. I used the Active brand long sleeved v-neck in plum and an Active brand crew neck tee. These are super cheap and come in tons of colors! Get one or get a bunch: one for $8, two for $12, and four for $20.

The first step would be to pre-wash your items and get all the chemicals and finishes out of the fabric!

Next, grab some rubber bands (I used hair ties) and twist and tie your shirt however your heart desires! I went for two twists and then one big twist. Remember, the way you twist is going to change the outcome of the bleached part of the shirt! Check out this website for twist and tie ideas.

Now itโ€™s time to prepare your bleach! Remember take every precaution before you start this and wear gloves!! I used my bathroom sink as my bucket/bowl but you can do: sink, bucket, or giant bowl to be host to your bleach. You are going to want to dilute your bleach with water to make it not as potent and not damage your shirt! I used 1 cup of bleach for every 2 cups of water. You donโ€™t need too much liquid; I filled a quarter of my sink.

Once your bleach is prepared, it is time to dip your shirt into the bleach! This part is all up to you! For my shirt, I rolled it in the liquid got the whole outside wet. But you can do whatever method you choose, this is your chance to be creative and experiment!

After your shirt is dipped/soaked in the liquid you are going to want to keep a good eye on the shirt! Bleach is fast acting and can burn a hole into the fabric if left on for too long! I let my shirts to sit for about 5-7 minutes. Once they have reached the color you want, rinse the shirt in cold water and soap to get out as much bleach as possible. Once you do that, throw it in the washer and dryer and you are good to go!
